Hearings About Single Member Districts
(sample maps attached)

January 5, 9, 10

The Irving ISD Board of Trustees voted December 12 to call public input hearings on the proposition of electing trustees by single member districts, naming the location of the hearings, and directing Attorney C. Robert Heath to provide the administration with two illustrative/hypothetical maps for public use: one map depicting  7 single member districts and the other showing  5 single member districts (with 2 elected at large).

Sample 7:0 and 5:2 plans with hypothetical maps:

In previous meetings with the Board, Heath has reviewed the past litigation involving single member districts, provided the Board with information on 2010 census data and has described election law. The vote by the Board of Trustees on December 12 is intended to support public participation and does not endorse or indicate any decision by the Board in favor or against single member districts.

Public input hearings will begin at 7 p.m. on January 5, 9 and 10 at the three largest IISD high school campuses, respectively. The public may attend any or all of the meetings:

Date Time Location Directions
January 5 7:00 pm Irving High School Directions
January 9 7:00 pm MacArthur High School Directions
January 10 7:00 pm Nimitz High School Directions

The Board of Trustees will convene in a special called meeting January 12th for a potential vote to decide if the Board will move ahead with creating single member districts. This special called meeting will take place at the district Administration Building.

On October 3, 2011, Heath gave a brief presentation to the Board providing information regarding the potential conversion to single member districts. The presentation included options for election systems, procedure for changing an existing system, 2010 census data for Irving, redistricting criteria and timeline guidelines.

As draft illustrative/hypothetical maps and details become available, the information will be posted to the Irving ISD website and will be made available upon request at the Administration Building via the records request process the public/community and via the communications office for the media.
